FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What documents should I verify before buying a boat?+

Review the seller's identification, any registration or Pleasure Craft Licence documents, maintenance and service records, and — where applicable — trailer ownership documents. When in doubt, consult a qualified marine professional.

What is the difference between a Pleasure Craft Licence and a Pleasure Craft Operator Card?+

A Pleasure Craft Licence (PCL) is a number issued for the vessel. A Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is proof of competency for a person operating a motorized pleasure craft. Both are administered federally by Transport Canada.

Should I arrange insurance before purchasing?+

Insurance is not required by law for private pleasure craft in British Columbia, but lenders and marinas often require it. Speak with a qualified marine insurer or broker before completing a purchase.
